Power-to-Green Methanol via CO2 Hydrogenation—A Concept Study including Oxyfuel Fluidized Bed Combustion of Biomass

A revolution of the global energy industry is without an alternative to solving climate crisis. However, renewable sources typically show significant seasonal and daily fluctuations. This paper provides a system concept model decentralized power-to-green methanol plant consisting biomass heating with thermal input 20 MWth. (oxyfuel or air mode), CO2 processing unit (DeOxo reactor MEA absorption), alkaline electrolyzer, synthesis unit, separation wind park. Applying oxyfuel combustion has potential directly utilize O2 generated by which was analyzed varying critical parameters. major objective determine whether applying positive impact on plant’s power-to-liquid (PtL) efficiency rate. For cases utilizing more than 70% combustion, oxyfuel’s demand fully covered making viable option for large scale applications. Conventional recommended small parks scenarios using surplus electricity. Maximum PtL efficiencies ηPtL,Oxy = 51.91% ηPtL,Air 54.21% can be realized. Additionally, case study one year operation been conducted yielding annual output about 17,000 t/a 100 GWhth./a 50,500 woodchips park size 36 MWp.
